I remember very clearly my first badge in 1956 – designed and made whilst still a student at the Royal College of Art – it was for a London Society of Chartered Accountants and the secretary gave me my first lesson in cost accountancy. Since then I have produced over 100 badges and each one has been an enjoyable challenge. Armorial bearing has been conferred by the College of Arms since the 14th century and heraldry forms a major part of most coats of arms but a certain amount of interpretation is possible. The badge surround not only protects the jewelled or enamelled arms but also can accommodate suitable symbols or engraving. The mystique lies in translating the patron’s requirements in such a way as to add charm and dignity to a piece which needs to convey status, authority and responsibility. To this end, after appropriate consultation, I offer coloured drawings and estimates. |
